BOOK COVER DESIGN - TYPOGRAPHY - VISUAL RESEARCH - EXPERIMENTATION
Initial sketches of idea, how it could look and my thought process of the design.
This was my very first idea, I didn’t want to ignored it so I decided to experiment with lino and create a rough mock to see how the thought would work on the page.
I ended up leaving it here, sometimes it is best to leave ideas that don’t resonate.
Something that struck me with this page is the uniqueness of letters and their alphabets. These letters lie in the word Lark, I wanted to see how I can use them in my designs, how can I play around with the letterforms.
Taking visual imagery from my own bookshelf, my partner is a BIG bird lover so he picked out a Lark for me. I then used the Cut Up Methodology by William Burroughs (taken from the book The Third Mind). I used this process to free myself from my own creative limits and allow the collage to create something new.
From doing primary research and seeing what the book cover landscape already looks like, I knew that graphic and bold covers were becoming increasingly popular. Designers weren’t just using imagery to portray the novels but the type also added to the storytelling.
With this insight I sketched out the word lark and incorporated the meaning into the flow and rhythm of the word.
